@Toasticus: Okay I'll admit I'm stumped on remembering any specific games that had 'matchmakling' per se.
It's mostly 'quick match' or just 'multiplayer'. And I'm not about ot boot up a VM and re-install age old attic games to test each one and see which one flags as having fuck all on the back end anymore to connect to. Though thats not a great test either.
I can look for you, but I doubt anyone at the time was noting down what had what. There was no IWnet controvies, or a Wikipedia to store this 'useless' information on. Heck Wikipedia doesn't even record what back end system its using for modern games. I guess no one truly cared till now. Even OFP2 doesn't mention that its P2P, despite that sounding the death knell for its MP in little under a month of the games release.
@High Speed Indeed: See, I'm the same way. Sadly, most of the genres that I like are not big sellers, and when they are, are not really cutting edge in technology (civ/wargames/RPGs). Most of the titles I like are older titles, and don't require brand new hardware all the time. I don't really see the need to play new titles right away, as I'm still in the middle of huge campaigns with 100s of hours left. When I finish them, I generally play something new to break up the experience before going back.
My Entertainment centre is already a snafu of cables, cords and other crap that I can't set up all my old consoles in any meaningful way there that would allow me to play them in comfort, so I emulate them on PC. There's a C64 emulator, btw. I played Impossible Mission and Dragonriders of Pern (sadly, they don't really stand the test of time.)
Hmm... I forget what we were talking about. Oh... new consoles.
